Michelle Druce spent most of her career as in-house counsel inside technology and financial services companies. She knows how products get built, rolled out, and marketed — and where the consumer lens is often overlooked.

Now she's the Executive Director of the Oregon Consumer League, a consumer protection nonprofit that's been operating for 59 years. She's on the other side of the table — fighting for consumers, and trying to bring up the next generation of consumer lawyers.

For years, consumers had no idea she was working on their issues. Hopefully now they do.

Congratulations to all who participated in the Consumer Federation of America's impactful Consumer Advocacy Day! During 150 meetings, advocates urged lawmakers and staff to address the growing threat of high-cost lending, oppose efforts to weaken consumer protections for earned wage access, and defend the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau which has secured more than $21 billion in relief for consumers since its creation.

Throughout the day, participants shared stories from their communities and provided policymakers with firsthand perspectives on how financial policies impact working families, military households, seniors, and consumers across the country.

Congratulations to our former Oregon Consumer League Board Member, Michael Fuller!  Michael Fuller received the Oregon State Bar Consumer Law Section Award of Merit at the holiday event on December 11th!

On September 15, 2025, the Oregon Consumer League and other consumer advocates joined Governor Tina Kotek as she signed three new consumer protection bills into law, celebrating a legislative push to make everyday financial transactions fairer and more transparent for Oregon families.

Senate Bill 605

Oregon will join 13 other states in prohibiting debt collectors, hospitals, and other entities from reporting medical debt to credit reporting agencies. The bill also includes provisions that prohibit credit reporting of debt on medical credit cards. The law takes effect on Jan. 1, 2026. See full text.

Senate Bill 430

This bill requires that prices for goods or services offered online to Oregon residents include all fees and charges a buyer must pay to complete the transaction. It also requires that goods and services be advertised with all mandatory fees included. Businesses that violate the requirement could face action under Oregon's Unlawful Trade Practices Act. The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2026. See full text.

House Bill 3178

This bill provides significant transparency and safeguards when financing a car purchase. It mandates dealers to void the sale or provide financing at the original terms if financing cannot be arranged within ten days after the sale. Additionally, the law will now provide stronger protections if a sale involving a trade-in vehicle deal falls through and the dealer sells the trade-in vehicle, and it provides a consumer rights disclosure in multiple languages at the time of purchase. This new law takes effect on Jan. 1, 2026.  See full Text HB3178 2025 Regular Session - Oregon Legislative Information System
